We learn from Matthew’s story that God is able to use anyone, for His purpose, regardless of their background and skill. Little did Matthew know that his skill would be used to capture the ministry of our Messiah.

As a (despised) tax collector, he didn’t hesitate when Jesus instructed him (Matthew) to follow Him. Right there and then Matthew knew he was giving up his only source of income and entering a realm of the unknown.

Jesus would use Matthew’s skills for a new purpose. His mission was to keep record of the events to follow and he did so through carefully observing everything around him and capturing these timeless moments to the finest detail.

God prepares each of us to fulfill our purpose eventually, long before we even realise. We might think our current job is a complete waste of time and as a result despise every moment, while it is actually preparation for a greater calling to follow, if we are only willing to learn the lessons required.

How could Matthew have foreseen that the promised Messiah would call him to become one of His followers and as a result write one of the gospels? One thing is certain. When Jesus called him, he responded without hesitation. Are we willing and (avail)able to give up our comfort for a life of serving and sometimes even suffering?

Matthew showed us how Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and what it looks like not to be ashamed of the gospel. He took every opportunity to introduce other people to Jesus and was willing to sacrifice his life for a life dedicated to a bigger cause.

Let’s take a lesson out of Matthew’s life and shift our focus to using our skills for the greater good. Who knows? God might call you today to use your skills for the sake of His kingdom. Are you prepared?!

“As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, ‘Follow Me!’ And he got up and followed Him.”
